Streamyx – TM Net SUCKS! – PART II

In March 2004, I decided to take a study leave and fully concentrate on taking up my MBA course. Hence, I’m a fulltime house-girlfriend from now on & most of my time will be spent at home infront of my newly upgraded PC! My MBA course requires internet activities such as online chat, forum discussion as well as upload/download files for my assignment research.

Not long after that, I came across a side-business opportunity with my photography (especially my underwater pics). Yup… stock-photography sites. I found this as a great opportunity for me to earn a little bit of money to further support my photography passion. Heck! I get paid in USD so WHY NOT! Almost daily, I will be uploading new images to some SP sites to sell my pics. We’re talking about minimum 20MB worth of uploads a day.

However… the happy ending ENDED… A new nightmare started in early November 2004.

2nd PROBLEM – Slow Uploading Process

One ill-fated day, I experience major problem in uploading my images to the sites. I tried and tried and tried but ended up getting frustrated by the end of that day. Additional to that, any emails (size beyond 500kb) couldn’t be sent out at all. I tried with my hotmail account, my personal astherlau.com account, even my yahoo account.

A few days after failing to improve, I decided to call upon my website server provider for some clue. (Date: 9th Nov 2004) On the very same day, he came back to me with a negative result. There was no problem with the server that host my email account. He advised me to consult Streamyx. (Oh no! Not again! With each call to TM Net, I’ll gain a few strands of gray hair!)

I was getting very nervous because deadline for me to submit my assignment was pretty near, yet I couldn’t do much work & share files with my other classmates. Receiving emails was not a problem during this period. I don’t remember having to receive attachments, hence, I’m not sure if I would have experience problem if a friend was to send me big files attachment in an email.

The LONG PROCESS Begins Again

I called TM Net & once again I had to go through the standard procedure of “cleaning” my PC. In addition to this, my PC is now connected to the modem via a router (both darling & my PCs are networked via the router). I was told to disconnect the router & reconnect my PC directly to the modem.

I did all that & called TM Net back because my problem was not resolved. The customer service person told me that he’ll look into the matter. I wasn’t sure if a report number was created at that time. I waited for a couple of days & called back again. This time with a little bit more agitated tone in my voice. A report number 2217343 was finally filed on 23rd Nov 2004. For a clearer story, here’s part of an email I sent to TM Net:

TO: custcare@tm.net.my
Date: 14th
Dec 2004

Dear Sir/Madam,

It has been nearly 2 months since the problem of uploading started with my internet connection. Approximately 2 months ago, I was not able to upload files into the website as well as send emails which have file size larger than 400kb.

I work from home and the internet is my sole working tool. This uploading problem has affected my productivity and profits in a DAILY basis.

I have filed a report pertaining this case to your technical department. My current report number is 2217343 dated 23rd Nov 2004.

I called your technical department for help 1 week after the first uploading occurred. However, I was told to “clean” my Internet Explorer of its “cookies and temporary files” and try uploading again. No formal report was taken as your personnel told me this is a normal procedure to follow. I did exactly what the personnel told me to do, but to my disappointment the problem still exists. I tried using another computer in my house but the same thing happened; UPLOADING FAILURE.

I tried uploading from a friend’s place in Bangsar who has only a 386kb connection with Streamyx. The uploading was successful in her place, thus, I suspect it should be my streamyx connections’ problem. I called the technical department again and described the whole scenario to your personnel again. Finally, a report was taken after 2 ½ weeks from my initial phone call and I was told the problem will be rectified soon.

To my great further disappointment, I waited and called several times to follow-up on the case and nothing has been done to solve my uploading problem.

We WANT Rebate

Yup… Both darling & I felt that we’ve been cheated. We decided to demand for rebate of the problematic months that we have to face. Hence, the remaining of the email:

Thus, I am writing this email to inform the billing department that I will not be paying for my last 2 months bills (November and December 2004) until I am able to work with my internet connection again. I believe, as a customer, I have not been receiving a proper service and product from your company in these two months. In addition to that, I have been losing my valuable time, money and clients due to the technical problems caused by your end.

I hope to get a feedback soon and I do not expect to be penalized if I do not pay for my 2 monthly bills as mentioned above.

I BLEW My Top

Now it’s my turn to explode on the phone. I remembered calling the call centre for no less than 3 times to follow-up. (fancy a customer doing the follow-up instead of TM Net!) Finally, I couldn’t take all these bullS*** anymore! Once again, I dialed the number. You can imagine how I screamed at the poor guy on the phone. (Must be my PMS time . I even shocked myself.) But the next morning (at around 9am or so) I recieved a phone call from their technician informing me to check on my internet line again because he’s just rectified the problem. Finally! (This was sometime a week before Christmas 2004.) True enough, I can upload file & send emails larger than 500kb in size again!

What HAPPENED To Our Rebate?

I sent another email to follow-up:

To: custcare@tm.net.my

Date: 13th January 2005

Dear Sir/Madam,

It’s been nearly a month since I sent my last email and I am sad to say that the Customer Service of your company is really disappointing. There has been no follow-up made to settle this case.

I am further more upset when I found that I am still charged for the month of November-December 2004 in my recent bill statement. This is outrageous! Seeing the fact that I have not received a satisfactory internet connection for the months mentioned. How can TM Net charge me for the service that I did not receive properly?

This email comes to you as a reminder of my previous complaint and I hope I get some feedback from TM Net pretty soon. I will not hesitate to bring forward this matter to other respective media and organization if my case is being ignored once again.

Extremely upset customer!

Here’s their reply:

From: custcare@tm.net.my

Date: 8th February 2005

Dear Miss Asther,
Thank you for your e-mail. We would like to apologize in advance for the late reply. With regards to your query, upon checking, we noticed that the uploading problem has been resolved. Upon referring the matter to the management, we regret to inform you that rebate cannot be granted as the speed offered for streamyx in on a best effort basis as mentioned in the terms and condition. Apart from that, we noticed that the connection did not face any problems and the problem was only with upload with big files. Please revert to us if you have further queries on this matter.

Customer Care Support, CRM
TM Net Sdn. Bhd.

Note on the dates. They took so long to reply my emails. You can’t imagine how upset I am & how much I distrust the customer service department from this moment on! They refused to acknowledge our lost & anxieties throughout the whole scenario. WE HAD TO PAY THEM for making us suffer both emotionally & financially! How fair is this? We felt so cheated!!!

Darling initially refused to pay one month bill & true enough, our connection was disconnected. I desperately need internet connection at home for my work & studies, hence, we had to turn our heads down & continue pay these people.

Does anybody know if there is a similar broadband facility from other company in SS2 area? Particularly around Damansara Intan area. We tried searching online & found one which cost nearly twice the price for slower connection as compared to what we’re paying for Streamyx now. I was told that Jaring has one but not quite sure plus they’re using TM Net’s line as well. Oh! how we yearn to move to another company which can give us better broadband facility & services. Can anyone advice???

We experienced another problem for the past 2-3 weeks. Will continue in the next blog…

  1. My friend was complaining to me about streamyx too…she couldn’t connect at all the whole of yesterday. And before that, she was constantly disconnected.

She is so pissed too. She is in Subang Area.

  2. Good grief, it sounds so torturous. I guess since they monopolize the market, there is nothing much you can do, since they know that you need the internet still! It’s a sad state to be in, but unfortunately we have to suffer for poor service because of lack of choice.

  3. Grace:
Ya… they’re monopolizing this service, hence took this chance to discriminate & cheat on people like us.

    Poulotte:
Did your friend call the customer service line? I’m pretty sure she’ll get even more “pissed” too after calling these people. Pray she doesn’t get heart-attack after that!

  4. i want to migrate to other country for better broadband services T_T

  5. eikichi: Where are you living currently?

  6. you all are stupid la..now we re in malaysia with poor technolgy and you all want a technology like us and japan..so go to the damn countryla..i using a streamyx since 2004 512kb.i dont get any problem, maybe just 1 0r 2 problem no connection..but what im do,im off the pc and go sleep and tommorow connection up again..you want to know why you get this problem because you e very stupid about computer…boost your connection, download big file, play online game, stupid configure your router and network..so that is your problem…tm have one rak for put your port.at the rage tm will give 10 gb*example..at the rak have 10 user…so if 9 of 10 play online game, download stupid file,so what happen for the last user…so think about that

if you want play online game, make sure no many user at a website..if have many user, try play..if slow dont play a game la..

if u want download…dont using kazaa….or bit torent or anything..just using downloader at your window or mozilla..

mayb you will not face dis problem like me

if dont have a connection..make sure your networking is ok..your hub, cable, phone cable, splitter,or anything about pc

  7. Shiukoru:

It is not nice to call people stupid when u do not know the person at all. From ur comment, u’ve been ASSUMING that I’ve been playing games & what-not on the internet. DO NOT ASSUME when you do not know more facts. You also assume I do not know about setting up/maintaining a computer system at home. ONCE AGAIN… DO NOT ASSUME. I’ve set up & maintained my office communication system (internet, computers, office machines) previously without much problem except from TMNet once again.

As a bonus, my brother-in-law is in the IT line. Someone who knows his stuff VERY WELL & is very well-known for what he does in the IT world.

For your info, TMNet admitted my home internet problem was from their side, NOT mine.

Once again… it’s not nice to call people “asshole” or “stupid” unless you know the person well & do it face-to-face!

  8. yeah, its not fair to said some other stupid when u don’t know the miserable time of not having service while still paying. i also maintained my comp, at work and at home but when u don’t have connection for several month, u just get pretty angry yourselves.

anyway, i also have almost the same problem with no connection for two month, didn’t remember the exact month anymore. a lot of customer support call and lots of following. well i don’t scold at them cause, the receiving the complaint is not at fault. the fault mainly lies the technician area itself. i also pretty angry inside when i have to fork my money for something i didn’t get which is the connection. thank god at that time this happen to the connection at my family house at klang which at the time i was at kajang at rented house.

this case does not happen to most of users afaik, but u getting this problem. u will get pretty pissed seeing other ppl able to surf while u have to wait for several month to get yours back.

  9. I was upset with Streamyx mainly because I depend on the internet line for my work. In addition to that, I’m not getting the worth of what I’ve paid. It’s like I’ve been cheated out in the open but I can’t do anything!

    Thanx for understanding, Saiful.

  11. Asther you’re not the one having this problem. I’ve been facing this since 2000. But what choice do we have? Do we have any better company offered great broadband connection? I bet if we have TM wouldn’t be so arrogant like this.

  12. bloody hell, the moment I find myself unable to connect to the internet, I’m ready for another patiences training session.Customer service ask me to do the same thing again and again, plug out whatever cable, wait, and plug it in again…screw them..its shit annoying and I pray for another broadband company to come into Malaysia. And yes, we’ve been cheated.Such quality of service seriously do not deserve that kind of money.

  13. Here’s my story of TM nightmare…

Got an email saying my streamyx is registered and ready for activation on 27 June 2008. Ok fine. On 30 June, I called TM to ask what I have to do. They said just wait for my modem to be couriered to me.

2 weeks later no modem. I went to TMPoint Ampang and they said the modem was there all this while, waiting for me collect it. WTF?! I asked them why they never made a follow-up call to inform me of this, the ppl there simply keep quiet without saying a word. Damn.

1st screw up – Didn’t follow-up with customer about updates and database not updated with curent situation. Called 1 time, can’t reach customer and that’s it. Fuck them. Stupid.

That was then 12 July 08. Tried to plug-in streamyx and connect, “Link” LED kept blinking (means no signal from the wall socket). Shit. Called TM again and they told me to do all sort of things. In the end, they’ll send a technician to resolve the issue. They suspect it’s sth to do with jumper cable (isn’t this supposed to be resolved before they confirmed my registration on the 27th June!!??).

2nd screw up – Account was not prepared as physical connection still have problem despite the account getting registered and was mentioned as ready for activation.

Fine. 14th July I waited for the technician to come. 1 hour passed still no sign of him. Called TM several times and finally the technician called me to inform that he had called TM’s contractor to check on the jumper cables.

3rd screw up – Technician didn’t bother to inform customer what he was doing and that he wasn’t coming to my apartment. So a waste of time for me as I had took half day leave for this. Sohai.

So I let them fix it the whole day. At the end of the day, still couldn’t accomplish anything. Called the technician a few times during the day and he just said that he’ll call me back and let me know.

At 6pm, I gave him a call and he gave me the same answer, that he already told the contractor to check the jumper cable and still waiting for them to get back to him. So I asked for the contractor’s number and he said he cannot gimme the number. Ok fine, so I told him to call contractor one last time for this day to ask for update and he said he dun wan to do that coz it’s not nice to call ppl so many times to ask for updates. Damn stupid kampung malay kid (I’m malay btw). Kelantan somemore. Makes me wanna puke listening to his accent.

4th screw up – Even asking for updates from contractor also they’re scared to do coz already late and scared will disturb contractor. Bodoh.

Thanks and I feel much better now sharing this with you. :)

  14. Gosh Fye… I’m trully sorry for you with all that troubles & unfair treatments given to you by TMNet. Sigh… What can we do as paying consumers to protect ourselves? I believe recently there’s this consumer association in Malaysia? Is it any good? Can anyone advice?

  17. The line is getting worse and worse now, since christmas.
Something wrong with the cable under sea?
How come I never know of this?

  18. Shiukoru: learn how to speak before you start running you mouth. It doesn’t matter what people are doing with their online connection. whether it be downloading music or playing games. If Tm net says they can give you 1meg then lets see the 1meg. Since they are not able to give that to people I can tell you right now they don’t have a good enough network to handle the amount of people they have. I know this because i used to own an internet company over seas. So shut your mouth, go back to school and learn how to talk.

  19. Couldn’t agree more with johnny, we pay so TMnut must deliver as promised.

  20. Are you really having b-r-o-a-d-band?

    Click this links to check

    What is Broadband? (http://www.broadband.co.uk/guide.jsp)

Connection speeds and download limits (http://www.broadband.co.uk/guide.jsp?section=3)

Is telephone cable the same as road highways?

    1. Roads during peak period will have traffic jams.

    2. However, telephone cables are similar to TNB cables.

    3. One electric cable from TNB is connected to a row of terrace houses.

    4. Bear in mind the usage of electricity is 24 hours per day in every house. Peak usage is during the night with TVs, airconds etc. Do you experience low voltage? Power surge perhaps.

    5. Is broadband usage 24 hours? Is every house using broadband?

    Therefore,

    1. I urge everyone to check whether you are getting the download speed that you subscribed from streamyx. For your info, you should get at least 90%.
    2. Please click this link to see how much speed you get. Click a few times to confirm. (http://promos.mcafee.com/speedometer/test_0150.asp)
    3. If you are getting below 50%, please do a print screen.
    4. To do a print screen, put your cursor at the down right hand corner (put the cursor at the time) to get the date and day appear. Once appear, press together the keyboard buttons ctrl and prt sc.
    5. Next click start, All Programs, Accessories, Paint
    6. Press keyboard buttons ctrl and v
    7. Then File, Save As (put a name) Save into your desktop
    8. Send it as attachment to amarjit.singh@cmc.gov.my, shaharliza@cmc.gov.my, mdshaani@fomca.org.my
    9. They need your support and evidence to bring up to TM
    10. Please support for everyone benefit

  21. Hi guys,

We are working on the initiative for the discussion that going to be held around end of the month. Please kindly pass the initiative along and spread the words.

Information on TMNET & MCMC Top Guy Discussion Session (Post #1): http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1024067

Need your kind assistancce and cooperation to gather as much information as possible to push the whole thing through MCMC and Prime Minister Office’s Complaint Bureau and make a stable and reliable broadband services a reality.

    Thanks alot.

  22. Shiukoru is really suck, satisfied with 512kb of TMNET service mean you do nothing with your internet connection. If you ever using other country internet their lower speed connection also get a better performance then TMNET 1meg service. If 512kb really can fulfill all people need then why Japan got 100meg service. 3-4 pc network is nothing to feel pround.IT not just what you think as simple as that. No body dare to said he know all the think and mastering all the thing in IT. Today although you are the best but not mean that tomorrow you are. Go back to you nursery to start learn again.”Kampung Kid”
